VIN or OEM number: what is the difference?

The VIN and the OEM number are not the same thing. The VIN, also called the chassis number, identifies the complete vehicle. The OEM number identifies a specific part fitted to, or compatible with, that vehicle.

What is the VIN used for?

The VIN contains information about the car: make, series, year, production and version. It helps understand the original configuration when several possible fitments exist.

What is the OEM number used for?

The OEM number identifies the part itself. It is the reference used to compare a used part with the one you need to replace.

Which one should you use?

If you have the OEM code from your old part, start with it. If not, use the model, year, engine and, if needed, the VIN. For electrical and mechanical parts, combining VIN and OEM code is the safest approach.

Practical example

Two Opel Astra cars can share the same year and engine but use a different module or headlight. The VIN describes the car, while the OEM code confirms the part.
